Repair of a steam pipe break in front of Alexander's Department Store at Lexington Avenue and East 58th Street in New York in 1987. The chain, which started in 1928 in the Bronx, owned all the real estate that it's stores were located on, which was subsequently acquired by Vornado Realty. The artwork over the door to the discounter, consisting of colorful plastic spheres is by artist Stefan Knapp and was installed as a gift of the owner of Alexander's, George Farkas. (© Frances M.
