A barge filled with recyclable paper awaits transport at the Dept. of Sanitation West 59 St. Marine Transfer Station on October 9, 2005. All of the recycled paper collected in Manhattan travels through the pier and onto barges where it is towed off to the various companies which are contracted with the city to process the refuse. Each barge contains tons of material and the station operates on two shifts, six days a week. The barges are netted prior to transport to prevent debris from falling into the river. (© Richard B.
